Irazú Volcano National Park
This park protects colossal Irazu, which, at 3,432 meters above sea level, is the tallest volcano in Costa Rica. The active volcano has a long history of eruptions. This protected area’s many geological features include the Hermosa Beach, Principal and Diego de la Haya craters, as well as the Sapper formation—the highest point in the massif, from which both Caribbean and Pacific coasts may be seen. Visitor services include information, a park ranger station, trails, restrooms, signage, a cafeteria, parking and several natural viewpoints.

Directions
By car: From San José, take the Florencio del Castillo Highway to Taras de Cartago, and head north on the highway to Irazú Volcano, passing through the communities of Cot, Tierra Blanca, Potrero Cerrado and San Juan de Chicuá. The trip takes about one and a half hours. By bus: From San José, service is provided every day at 8 a.m. The bus leaves from 2nd Ave., between 1st and 3rd streets, in front of Hotel Costa Rica. To visit the Prusia Sector, 2 km before reaching the community of Tierra Blanca, turn left for approximately 4 km. Access to the sector is in bad condition.
